Start off the New Year right by showing your Cardinal & Gold in celebration of the 2009 Rose Bowl champion USC Trojans! These sneakers are the latest additions to an important subset of my collection- sneakers I can wear to the Coliseum on game day. They get extra points for being Pumas. The Speeder Cups were originally designed for the Spanish soccer team, but they fit in with USC football just fine. Just don’t kick the flagpole on the way to the stadium in these sneakers! As always, Stay Fresh and Fight On!!!

New Year, New Wishes

Time to wake up from your food coma, take out the Christmas tree, and look ahead to the new year. You might not have gotten exactly what you wanted this year (still no two front teeth), but there is another, brand-spanking new year right around the corner. So what is on my wish list for 2009, you ask? Well…

Marty McFly sneakers

Nike Marty McFly’s
And not the weak, close-but-no-cigar Nike Hyperdunks. I’m talking the real-deal, straight outta Back to the Future 2 McFly’s. Hell, even a fan was able to make a McFly better than Nike’s release. Now I was gonna tell you to log onto McFly2015 and sign their petition, but their site seems to have gone kaput. Well, while we wait for a true McFly release you can always pick up an authentic Delorean. Can you imagine stepping out of your shining Delorean with a fresh pair of McFly’s on your feet? Jumping Gigawatts!!!

New Balance Pigeons

So the legendary Nike Pigeon SB Dunks live on with the release of the New Balance Pigeons. And this time the release seems to have been riot-free! Awesome, but where’s my pair? It must’ve gotten lost in the mail (I forgive you this time, New Balance). If you missed out on the release (like me) you still have some hope in getting a pair…Hope that your several-hundred-dollar pair from eBay isn’t a total fake. That’s ok- I’ll just have to wait for the Puma Pigeons to release. That’s right, I am starting that rumor right now. Get on it, Puma! Your sneaker lineup is sorely lacking in the pigeon department!

World Peace
Ok, so technically it’s not a sneaker, but a little world peace would go a long way right now. Who knows- it might even inspire some awesome sneaker designs? And if world peace is too much to ask, then just send us some awesome 2009 sneaker releases.

Well, that’s what’s on my wishlist for 2009. Let me know what you’re wishing for- drop me an email. Have a terrific New Year’s Eve and stay safe- no spilling champagne on your sneakers!

Sneak of the Month (December 2008)

Ho Ho Ho. Sneaker Claus here spreading holiday cheer and bringing you December’s Sneak of the Month- the Puma Jetter. This one is destined to become a classic. My elves worked hard to put this sneaker together. Combining copious amounts of mesh and a masterful colourway, the Jetter (Black/White/Spectra Yellow) is sure to be on the wish list of good little boys and girls.

You know my favorite part of the Puma Jetter? The little speckles along the sides. If you are on my Nice list this year, you might find yourself with a pair of these sneaks under your tree. If you’ve been naughty, you’ll have to wait until 2009 for the next Sneak of the Month. Until then, have a merry Christmas/Hanukkah/Eid al-Adha/Kwanzaa/Festivus.

Dassler Family Feud

What does Herzogenaurach, Germany, mean to sneaker fans? Those with a taste for history may know it as the town where Adi and Rudy Dassler started a shoe factory after World War I. They made some great shoes, but a bitter feud developed, and they split to form their own companies, Adidas and Puma. See- Adi Dassler, Adi-das? Thank goodness Puma wasn’t called Rudydas. (According to wikipedia, it was originally called Ruda- blech). Sneaker Wars, written by Barbara Smit, chronicles the history of these two companies.

I haven’t read the book yet, but I have always been interested in this story of two brothers who went on to found my two favorite sneaker brands. This book is sure to be on my summer reading list.

Puma & Adidas Quarterly Earnings

Puma released their 1st quarter earnings for 2008, and they were slightly below analysts’ forecasts. Read the full article here.  Also, Adidas reported that first-quarter earnings fell on higher advertising spending. For more financial details, read the Reuters article. Let’s do our part and pick up some new sneakers today!

Inaugural Sneak of the Month (June 2008)

Drum roll please…badabadabadabadabadabadabumm!!!

Here it is, the very first Sneaks Outta Left Field Sneak of the Month! The ‘centerfold’ for June 2008 is the Puma California Shoe Biz edition!

This pair has been patiently waiting in its box since its release. On June 1st, it was finally unleashed. After getting a deep breath of fresh air, these sneaks roared through town. I LOVE orange, and splatter effects (such as the Puma Jetters) boost this pair even higher in my eyes. I was lucky enough to snag one of the 150 pair produced, and since it is rare, I plan to only wear these sneaks once. What better opportunity than my birthday? These sneaks enjoyed their moment in the sun, and they rest easy knowing that while they hibernate in their box, the month of June is theirs.

Why Sneakers?

Why do we do it? Why do we wait in the cold for a fresh pair of shoes? Why do we chase down the few pairs produced? This isn’t like trying to snag a tickle-me elmo for Christmas- this is an ongoing, endless quest for footwear that many people don’t even wear. Sound a bit odd? A bit obsessive? I’m sure it does to outsiders. But true heads know that being the first in your town to rock a fresh pair is like no other feeling. Watching your new kicks snap necks as you walk down the streets always puts a smile on your face.

Some people do it to have the freshest kicks to wear. Some like to have a pristine collection that will never be worn. At the end of the day, though, everyone is drawn to having fresh sneaks that express their individuality and personality. With so many sneaker choices, there is plenty of room for individual taste. That’s what Sneaks Outta Left Field is all about. My personal taste is primarily German shoes- If you see me on the street, I will probably be rocking Pumas or Adidas. True sneaker heads collect sneakers that truly represent who he/she is. Real fans don’t chase blindly after the most hyped release. We sift through the pile of sneakers to find the ones that really fit our personality.

Now you know where I’m coming from. Stop by for sneakers and news that speak to me. Hopefully you’ll find some good sneaks in here that speak to you too. Until the next time, stay fresh.
